What is a filling?

A filling is used to treat a small hole or cavity in a tooth.

How is the filling done? 

1- The dentist will apply a numbing  gel to the gums.

2- Using a drill/or another specialized tool, the  dentist removes the decayed area of the tooth.

3- The dentist then fills the hole in the tooth.

4- Finally, the dentist will polish the filling and may adjust it so that the patients bite feels normal.


What are the types of filling?

1- Composite filling. Composite resin fillings are made with a mixture of plastic and glass powder.

2- Amalgam filling - usually a silver filling.

3- Ceramic filling. Ceramic fillings are made of porcelain.

4- Gold filling - an alloy of gold, copper and other metals. The gold filling is  the most durable but also the most expensive.  


Can I eat after my filling is completed?

Composite fillings harden immediately following treatment. Dentists recommend waiting at least 2 hours following a filling procedure before resuming eating and  the patient should avoid very hard or sticky foods.


What are the foods that harm teeth and fillings?

Hard foods, e.g. nuts, sweets,hard fruits - apples and pears. Chewy foods: e.g. crusts, fibrous meat. Sticky foods: e.g. Chewing gum, toffee, caramel.


Why is the filling done and in what situations?

The procedure is used to fill an area of the tooth that the dentist has removed due to decay, this is commonly known as a cavity. Fillings are also used to repair cracked or broken teeth and teeth that have been worn down from misuse. 


What should you pay attention to after the filling is done?

Chew on the opposite side of the mouth to where the filling has been  done. Chew slowly,bite lightly, keep the mouth closed, avoid sticky foods, avoid  very hot and cold drinks, avoid hard foods and sweets.


Is tooth sensitivity normal after a filling is done?

Sensitivity to hot and cold food or drinks is completely normal after treatment is completed, it  is common to experience some mild pain. The pain should subside within a week aneyd sensitivity ceases after 2 to 4 weeks.


Is external carries contagious?

Cavities  don’t go away on their own accord, if not treated they can spread to the entire surface of the tooth and then to other teeth. Cavities tend to widen and deepen making your teeth brittle and prone to cracking or breaking.


Does the filling fall out?

Fillings can become loose, however  they are placed in such a way that they should stay in place for many years (10 to 15 years). Eventually they will require to be replaced.


What should be done if the filling comes out?

You should make an appointment with your dentist within 3 days to have it treated  otherwise the tooth could further decay.


Which cavities cannot be filled?

If the decay reaches your tooths centre chamber, called the pulp, a filling may no longer suffice to repair it.
